There’s a budget bar graph that lets you set realistic budgets based on past expenditures and then track your monthly spending pace. Wow.Now here comes the $70 Quicken Essentials for Mac, a new product marching proudly into the maw of a user base that’s ready to tear the product, and Intuit, into tiny little pieces. There was one thread complaining that he has relied on Quicken for over a decade to help manage multiple rental properties and raging that the new model should be illegal and is tantamount to price gouging.
Even though I'm coming into Quicken post-SaS, I just can't grasp why people take such personal offense to the model (other threads, not you OP) when it's standard practice in the industry. But it's only $2.50 and functionality is greater for me than other options, especially with downloading transactions across more than a dozen of my accounts.ĮVERYTHING is going subscription. That's $2.50/month! The UI is outdated, it runs a little slower than I feel it should, lacks intuitive features, etc. I really can't find something that does the same thing better for me (tracking expenses) and it's actually cheaper than the alternatives like YNAB. I went through a similar process too which is how I ended up with Quicken.

I think that space is probably where we will see the greatest innovation in both hardware and software in the days ahead! There are some really interesting new options popping up for mobile devices as the transition from larger computer to mobile devices is continuing to pick up speed. I found many lesser known alternatives were scattered throughout the various articles - and some were actually pretty interesting! Many of the big names (Mint, YNAB, etc) are repeated regularly, however search through a lot of different articles. However searching for Quicken alternatives will bring up a number of different sites with articles that cover a lot of different applications. There is also a mobile version for iOS, although that isn’t nearly as elegant as the desktop version is.especially in dark mode.

Unfortunately it is a Mac only program with no Windows option. For customizing very granular reports (how much did I spend at Starbucks on a trip from March 14th to March 23rd?) the process is much more streamlined and elegant in Banktivity. I actually prefer the reporting features in Banktivity, although Quicken also has very good reporting. So far I am very unimpressed with their customer service, but it wasn’t great with Quicken either so that point is kind of a wash between the two. This is a beautifully designed application that seems to have all of the features I need in a very elegant looking program. There are quite a few different personal finance applications available today, however the one I personally have decided to work with for 2020 is Banktivity 7! I will re-evaluate in November as I begin to plan for 2021. With that in mind, I set off looking for another option!

Nevertheless, this is clearly not an application that was designed to take full advantage of the latest developments in macOS. While many of the commands are a bit different, most of the features I use regularly are there in a relatively familiar, while somewhat dated, interface. I didn’t have very high expectations for it on the Mac platform based on reviews I had read. I have installed and used Quicken Deluxe for Mac for the past few months and it is surprisingly decent. Most long time Quicken users are on the Windows platform or were former Windows users that have migrated to the Mac platform.
Not sure if you are a Windows or Mac user.
